A white elephant named Airavata, which means "belonging to Iravati" in Sanskrit, accompanies the god Indra. Abhra-Matanga, "the elephant of the skies," "Naga-malla," "the warring elephant," and "Arkasodara," which means "brother of the sun," are other names for it. Airavata's elephant bride is referred to as "Abhramu". White as snow, Airavata has seven trunks, four tusks, and four eyes. The third son of Iravati is likewise named Airavata. He is described in the Mahabharata as a gigantic serpent.
