Hindu mythology describes Sharabha, a hybrid of a lion and a bird that has eight legs and is more strong than either a lion or an elephant and is capable of leaping across a valley in a single motion (Sanskrit:, Kannada:, arabha). Sharabha is described as an eight-legged deer in later literature. According to Shaivite texts, god Shiva took on the guise of Sharabha in order to subdue Narasimha, the ferocious man-lion avatar of Vishnu. Popular names for this manifestation include Sharabeshwara ("Lord Sarabha") and Sharabeshwara-murti. Typically, the story concludes with Vishnu becoming a devotee of Shiva and Narasimha being vanquished.
